 Fri, 03 Sep 2010

KUWAIT CITY : Kuwait will build a fourth generation nuclear reactor, which is considered the safest in the world, reports Al-Watan Arabic daily quoting Environment Public Authority (EPA) General Manager Dr Salah Al-Mudhi.
Al-Mudhi revealed the crisis management issue is included in the agenda of the meeting of GCC environment ministers in October. He said First Deputy Premier, Minister of Defense and Head of the Supreme Council for the Environment Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak will preside over the meeting.
Stressing the significance of finding alternative sources of energy in Kuwait, Al-Mudhi called on the government to effectively play its role in this regard. He said HH the Prime Minister Sheikh Nasser Mohammad Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah had earlier promised to take the necessary measures to diversify the sources of energy in the country, starting from the use of solar energy.
Al-Mudhi disclosed the Ministry of Electricity has formed a specialized committee tasked to find a suitable location for the construction of a small station for generating electricity by using wind and solar energy. He said a budget has been allocated for this purpose and the panel will coordinate with Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) in implementing the project.
Asserting that the use of nuclear energy is the most controversial since the other generation of reactors are more dangerous, Al-Mudhi clarified the agreement signed during the premier’s visit to France at the beginning of this year includes the fourth generation French nuclear reactors. He added Kuwait is the second GCC country that will launch this program, after the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
