KUWAIT CITY : The Kuwait Public Transport Company (KPTC) has referred the chairman and secretary of the Workers Union of the KPTC for interrogation for being at heart of the strike Sunday by 1,850 workers and for demanding a meeting with HH the Prime Minister Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammed Al-Sabah to discuss the problems of the workers, reports Alam Alyawm daily quoting reliable KPTC sources. The sources pointed out the surprise strike by the KPTC workers has baffled the current board members and they ended up taking wrong decisions such as dismissing 140 striking workers including 16 who are on holiday in their home countries and know nothing about the strike.
The source added it is surprising the KPTC has chosen to dismiss the striking workers and referring the union chairman and the secretary for interrogation for demanding the rights of the workers. Meanwhile, head of Kuwait Public Transportation Company (KPTC) Workers Union Mishal Al-Enezi said he was shocked when the company prevented him from meeting the 1,850 drivers, who went on strike for two days in protest of a decision on deducting inflation allowances from their salaries, reports Al-Seyassah daily.
The KPTC Board of Directors allegedly issued a verbal decision preventing Al-Enezi from entering the accommodation of the drivers when he went there to convince them to report for work to protect public funds, as well as their interests and that of the company. He claimed the security guards at the accommodation threatened to refer him to the police if he insisted on entering the premises. He then went to the police station to report the incident.
Al-Enezi said what happened is a violation of the union law because the KPTC board prevented him from practicing his role in defending the rights of the drivers.
In the meantime, Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor Undersecretary Dr Mohammed Al-Kandari confirmed the concerned authorities have started taking initial steps to address the problems of the drivers, adding the ministry received the complaints of the protesters.
