Municipal Council's Technical Committee discussed traffic congestions

  KUWAIT: Chairman of the Municipal Council's Technical Committee Farz Al-Mutairi stressed the need to build new roads and streets in order to reduce traffic congestions which became a problem that road users face.

In a statement made following the meeting of the committee on Tuesday, Al-Mutairi said that the Municipality, Traffic Department and Ministry of Public Works alone cannot be responsible for the issue of traffic congestions, but all concerned bodies are responsible for it. He added that all concerned bodies are required to issue decisions and recommendations as well as laws which can ease traffic congestions. This came in the presence of representatives of the Interior Ministry, Ministry of Public Works and some Municipality officials.

Al-Mutairi explained that the Technical Committee discussed all suggestions and developments which can reduce traffic congestions, such as expansion of roads and building a network of roads and bridges according to international standards. He added that the Interior Ministry presented the main obstacles which impede the implementation of its projects such as paperwork and routine.

For his part, Municipal Council Member Mohammed Al-Hadiyah said that the ideas which were discussed during the meeting will be raised to the Municipal Council in order to issue recommendations on issuing licenses and approving plans.

For his part, Representative of the Interior Ministry and Strategic Coordinator for Traffic and Transportation Sector Colonel Nasser Al-Enzi said that the most important idea on addressing traffic congestions is implementing the national comprehensive strategy for traffic for the period 2010-2020. He added that the problem cannot be addressed without the cooperation of all concerned bodies, mainly the Municipality and Ministry of Public Works. He stressed that the failure to solve the traffic problem costs the State great losses in future.

For his part, Municipal Council Member Abdullah Al-Kandari said that the application of law No. 115/2011 on the establishment of a public authority for roads will put an end to traffic congestions. He stressed that there are13 bodies in Kuwait concerned with the issue of traffic congestions and roads, adding that 270 new cars use the roads on a daily bases.
