KUWAIT CITY : The Ministry of Public Works (MPW) is currently constructing 98 projects for 22 government agencies, says Assistant Undersec-retary for Constru-ction Projects Hosam Al-Tahous.
In a recent press statement, Al-Tahous disclosed the projects are either in the design or contract-award stages, indicating the ministry is the major contractor for the country.

He admitted the ministry has suspended the construction of health centers and schools for the Health Ministry and its education counterpart.

He clarified the decision was based on the directive of the Cabinet that the concerned ministries should execute projects with an estimated cost of not more than KD 5 million, so the Egaila Health Center will be the last project that MPW will handle for the Health Ministry.

Al-Tahous added the MPW is on the verge of handing over five schools to the Education Ministry, after which other projects will be left for the latter to execute.

He confirmed the ministry has assigned special education projects to international experts with outstanding experience in that field, confirming the construction of special education schools in Jahra and Egaila.

Reaffirming that the contractor in charge of the KD 302-million Jaber Al-Ahmad Hospital project has completed 20 percent of the construction, Al-Tahous asserted the work is progressing as planned and it is expected to be completed by 2015.

Completed
He said the ministry has completed 18 percent of the construction at the Education Ministry headquarters with an estimated total cost of KD 67 million and it will be finished by 2014.

He added the ministry has been constructing administrative buildings for educational areas in the six governorates, while the projects in the Capital and Hawalli governorates will be finalized by end of this year with a total cost of KD 14 million.

The senior MPW official revealed other projects under construction include some centers in Messilah, Mangaf, Ahmadi and Mubarak Al-Abdullah suburbs. He said the ministry is currently designing a building for Awqaf and Islamic Affairs Ministry in Riggae at a cost of KD 20 million.

Stating the Interior Ministry has the lion’s share of the projects, Al-Tahous said these projects include the headquarters of the Special Forces in Sulaibiyah and 88 percent of construction has been completed. Another major project is the KD 57 million Police College project to be concluded in August, he added.
