UKs language requirement for spouses to begin
 Mon, 26 Jul 2010

LONDON: New rules requiring the spouses of British citizens coming from outside the European Union to live in the UK to prove they can speak English will come into effect in November.

Immigration Minister Damian Green said in a written statement to lawmakers Monday that the requirement "will help ensure that migrant spouses are able to participate in British life from the outset and integrate more easily into wider UK society."

The initiative was announced in early June and comes into effect Nov 29.

Couples already have to meet other criteria, like proving their marriage is genuine and demonstrating they can support themselves financially. Language tests are required for skilled workers and people applying for permanent residency or citizenship.
