KUWAIT: The Kuwait Teachers Society (KTS) have rejected an idea put forward by the Ministry of Education to extend primary school hours in order to serve food to the students. They questioned the justification of the decision and deemed it "shallow."
The KTS has expressed hope that the ministry will complete all preparations related to the next academic year, citing the filling of vacancies for senior officials and that teaching staff needs will be met. The society also hoped that the ministry will complete the ongoing maintenance work in a number of public schools.
In the meantime, the society underscored the need to finalize all the pending financial issues due for teachers.
In a press release, the society reaffirmed its full support for the Ministry of Education in its efforts in ensuring a successful academic year as well as tacking all the challenges and obstacles it may face in the process. The release went on to reiterate the society's determination to ensure the rights of teachers in enhancing their capacity.
Furthermore, the society expressed dismay over plans by the ministry to prolong school days in the primary stage in order to serve school food. According to the society, the move underpins the "shallowness" and shortsightedness of the ministry in handling the issue of introducing a longer school day. It elaborated that such justifications leave people with an impression that serving food at school is the most important issue, while citing the lack of clear strategies.
Voicing its strenuous rejection of the idea of prolonged school days, the society stated school hours should be consistent with the psychological and physical status of students. The society concluded by demanding that the idea should be carefully thought out before any decision is taken, stressing, in the meantime, that the opinion of those in the field should be taken into consideration.
