Do not overexpose your body to sunlight: Al-Otaibi
 Mon, 26 Jul 2010

KUWAIT: Dermatology Advisor at Asad Al-Hamad Center for Dermatology Dr. Mohammad Al-Otaibi confirmed Saturday that sunlight contains a large quantity of ultraviolet rays that endangers the health of people exposed to the sun.
He told Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) that a large number of young people expose their bodies to the sun in summer in order to get a tan and ignore the harmful impact of prolonged exposure.
Al-Otaibi asserted that in the past people got a natural tan when they walked in the sun or performed physical activity in the sun but now the youth overexpose themselves in their quest for bronze skin.
He pointed out that in the recent years, many cosmetic techniques have been developed to feed into the fad for skin bronzing such as injections, lotions and sprays.
He warned against the dangers of tanning beds.
He noted, "Some people think that getting bronze skin by artificial means is the best way, but modern research proves that ultraviolet rays cause skin cancer and these rays can be produced in tanning salons as well."
He called on the youth to avoid sitting in the sun in the afternoon and to wear white or light colored clothes during the day. He advised them to get periodic check-ups to detect the presence of a tumor.
He concluded, "Bronzed skin does not look healthy, on the contrary, it indicates that the skin was overexposed to UV rays either through sunlight or tanning beds."
